Show was the team's knowledge of inside baseball, its handling of the fine points, and its finished fielding, that won for it the championship and its enviable reputation. Coach Porter, who has either played against or seen the greatest college teams in the country proclaimed his infield the equal of any college infield he had ever seen. When the season opened six letter men and a big field of promising material were on hand. Coach Porter soon whipped men into shape to fill the vacancies and completed a smoothly running machine. "Red" Muir, a Bountiful boy of some baseball experience, proved a find for the slab work and bore the brunt of the labor successfully. He was ably seconded by Keep, Udy and Petty. "Shifty" Rex Sutherland lived up to his enviable reputation as the receiving end of the battery; Ott Romney held down the first cushion, and Captain Holmstead, Lon Romney and Tommy Fitzpatrick, all old stars of the great American game, romped in great style at second, short and third. Lars Peterson, Frankie Hurlbut and Done cared for the gardens in big league style. Vaughn, Darley and Deane, as utility men, proved valuable. After easily vanquishing the local high schools in early season practice games the Varsity met the famous Chinese-Hawaiian University team, which won a big share of its games with colleges throughout the entire country, and under adverse weather conditions took one game of the two played. The heavy hitting Salt Lake Union Association club took the 'Varsity into camp in a well played game by a 1 2 to 4 score. The classy fielding of the 'Varsity made the professionals hit hard to score while the collegians did well to accum-mulate 4. Company Q of Fort Douglas, with its Regiment Championship proved easy for the 'Varsity and the star regiment team was not much harder. But it was in the college league that the team, pitted against two pitchers of enviable reputation, showed its real merit. Air tight fielding and timely swatting brought a 5 to 2 victory over the B. Y. U. and the famous Johnson in Provo. Some more effective stick work and mishaps by the opponents enabled Utah to outclass the Aggies in Salt Lake. Then in a high class heartbreaking exhibition in which the 'Varsity earned a comfortable lead, only to fall one run behind in the first half of the ninth, Utah hit out a spectacular ninth inning victory over Johnson in Salt Lake. With Lon Romney out of the line-up with an injured ankle and the championship sewed up, Utah journeyed to Logan and succumbed before the star twirling of Schweitzer of the A.
