Show I•' mamReview of the Football SeasonTHE 1912 team in winning the Rocky Mountain championship for the first time in the history of the school, without doubt, demonstrated its superiority over all former Utah teams.Contrary to usual conditions the season opened with an abundance of developed material. With all of the 1911 team back, with the exception of Wim-mer and Diliman, the only positions to be filled were the guards. Tolman, the elephantine guard of the 1910 Freshman team, and Captain Cole of the track team were selected to fill the vacancies. In spite of their experience the team was slow to round into shape because of the impossibility of early training. The first game, played against Wyoming, in a drenching rain storm, was a decided disappointment. But the game played two weeks later against Denver was a brilliant exhibition and everyone was elated with Utah's chances for a "champ " team. Although the last half was cut in two, and twenty-three men were used, there was no let up to the scoring. The greatest game of the year was played in Denver, October 26, with the Mines. Both teams were at their best, but the Crimson warriors displayed more dash, more skill, and better endurance, and so won by a good margin. No one who saw that game doubted the relative strength of the two teams.Over anxious and outlucked, the U lost to Boulder by the close score of 3 to 0. Our only consolation was that the Mines trounced Boulder unmercifully two weeks later.Still smarting from the Boulder defeat the boys waded into Colorado College and won by an overwhelming score. Having won the conference title Utah rested on her laurels and permitted the Aggies to play her a tie game Thanksgiving. The team played the hardest schedule; had the greatest number of individual stars; played the best team work; maintained the best spirit, and the highest scholarship; had the largest squad; had the best scoring machine, running up record scores against conference teams, having her goal line crossed but once; and won the first Rocky Mountain championship for Utah, these reasons the 1912 team deserves the most important place in Utah Football History.FRED BENNION.Rex SutherlandCaptain-elect for 1913162 |
