The mill with its many stamps and large cyanide tanks yields about eight million dollars worth of gold bars per annum. Goldfield shows evidences in the large number of vacant houses and shacks of the large inrush of people and of their later desertion.Tonopah, the great silver camp, is only thirty miles away. The mining and milling is here done by many companies, rather than by one consolidated company as in Goldfield, and silver bars is the principal article of export. Leaving the two great mining camps, the party was taken to the still greater, from the standpoint of history, Virginia City mining district. Eight miles below Virginia City, situate on the Carson river, is the little town of Dayton. Legend states that early pioneers from Utah seeking fortunes in the West, first settled the town of Dayton, and were later driven out. Be that as it may, our car arrived in Dayton in the early afternoon. We engaged three teams and spring wagons to take us to Virginia City early the following morning. While the Professors were thus arranging for transportation to Virginia City, the students received an offer to play a game of baseball in the afternoon and an invitation to attend a dancing party in the evening. The fans, chiefly women and older men who were not at work, gathered on the ball ground to see the contest. I have written in my diary of the trip that on our side D. R. Gardner reached third base. No other comment need be made of the dance than to say that the town boys were few in number, the girls were there with their mothers, and the students were well chaperoned. The Comstock mines, famous for their past yield and present hot water were exceedingly interesting. The pumps, the ventilating system, the Sutro tunnel, the assay building and many other features of interest were visited. Arriving in San Francisco, our car was placed on the Oakland pier. Points of interest visited in and around the bay cities are too numerous to mention, except to name the Selby Smelter, Union Iron Works, Navy Yards, U. S. Mint and the Pacific Ocean. The great streams coming from the Sierra Nevada mountains during the glacial period, or some other geologic period, have worn away much of these mountains in which great veins of gold must have been deposited. This worn material has been deposited on the flats below to depths of forty to sixty feet. Gold is contained in much of it. These flats are now beingVIki |
