Val was born m Ogden as a member of the renowned Brownmg gun family Dunng his career Val was responsible for mnovative and important contributions to the arms busmess. He held 48 patents m the field of firearms and was a founder of the Brownmg Arms Company, servmg as president and chairman of the board. Ann and Val made their horn.e m Liege, Belgmrn. m the 1920s, returnmg to Ogden m 1935 Throughout their hves they mamtamed many fnends and contacts m Europe. Ann and Val gave generously to vanous mst1tut10ns throughout the state of Utah. Ann especially endeavored, with eventual success, to provide the Utah Symphony and Ballet West the facilities to perform m Ogden. The pamtmgs const1tutmg the Val A. Browmng Memonal Collect10n of 500 Years of European Masterworks were purchased by Ann and Val m the 1960s and represented that which was pleasmg to them, perhaps especially Ann. The art hung m their home m Ogden for many years. A first donat10n to the Museum of Fine Arts by the Browmngs was made m 1974, a year before Ann's death. In 1992 Mr. Brownmg made plans to bequeath his collection of more than a dozen old master pamtmgs to the Museum. An endowment estabhshed by Mr. Browmng enables the Museum to purchase old master pnnts and drawings for 1ts collection.
