Show African, Oceanic, LEFT &NewWorldArt I n order to acquamt audiences with non-Western European-based cultures, the Museum has acqmred objects that build upon generous donations of matenal from Afnca, the Amencas, Oceama, and other cultures. The strength of the Afr1ean collection hes m its wealth of masks, illustratmg not only numerous cultures but also var10us types of masks witlun each culture. With two thousand works from vanous Z aman cultures as its core, objects from other African cultures have been acqmred, resultmg m one of the finest collect10ns of its kmd m the country M~or holdmgs from vanous Amencan and Oceamc cultures also ennch the collection, such as N avajo weavmgs, Pueblo pottery and Northwest Coast objects such as the Raven Mask from the Kwakmtl culture ofBntish Columbia. In addition, since 1987, Mr Mort has made additional significant gifts from his remain- U T AH J\!I USEU .\1 OF Fl .\ ' !: ART S ing assemblage efAfrican, Ghandaran, andJapanese objects. Among the highlights ef Mr Mort's gifts is a Nsembu Mask, ef the Komo (Kumu) peoples, from the Democratic Republic ef the Congo (Zaire) The mask provides important insight into the spiritual practices ef the Komo people. The extensive research and field notes that accompany the objects make the Mort Collection one ef the most valuable resources ef its kind anywhere for the study ef central African culture. |
