Jaws of equal length, vertical and horizontal margins of preopercle rather finely serrated, having a long smooth spine at the angle, the length of which equals that of the diameter of the eye. Opercle with two flat spines, the upper being the longest, and twenty-nine denticulations below; sub- and interopercles serrated. Preorbital with a strong spine descending downwards. Posterior process of intermaxillaries extends backwards to opposite the anterior third of the orbit; the maxilla extends to below the same spot. Shoulder-scale serrated. Teeth villiform. Fins. The third to the fifth dorsal spines the longest. Ventrals do not reach nearly to the anus. Third anal spine long and strong, equalling one-sixth of the total length. Caudal forked, lobes of equal extent. |
