The want of warts on the face, the small ear. and the absence of a beard distinguish this animal at once from Sus scrofa, L. ; the want of a crest and beard and the black hoofs from Sus indicus, Schinz, of India. This Pig is now abundant, and to be found of fully developed size, in a country where, before the devastations of the Taiping rebels, the land was highly cultivated and not a wild pig was known. The natives declare that they are merely the descendants of the pigs of their farmsteads, which were abandoned and ran wild. The skin and skull from Shanghai I have brought home ; and Dr. Gunther was so kind as to help rue to compare the latter with skulls of Sus scrofa, L., of Europe, and S. indicus, Schinz, of India, |
