This pretty species of Banded Eel was brought to me by the Andamanese as the only sort of Sea-snake existing there. 224. MUR^ENA TESSELLATA, Rich. 225. MURJENA TIGRINA, Riippell. 226. MURINA FLAVOMARGINATA, Riipp. 231. MUR.ENA NIGRA, Sp. nOV. Length of head | of body, tail nearly | of the total length. Eyes small, diameter half that of the snout. Body and tail slender. Posterior nostril a circular patent opening ; anterior nostril tubular. Gill-openings narrow. Cleft of mouth extending to some distance behind the orbit. Teeth generally obtuse; the maxillary ones pointed and in two rows; the intermaxillaries in several obtuse rows; the palatines rounded and biserial. Fins. Dorsal and anal moderately developed ; the former commencing just behind a vertical line from the gill-opening, and half as high as the body. Colour uniform black. This specimen, 16 inches long, was discovered under a large stone at low water at Port Blair. Family PEGASID^E. 232. P E G A S U S D R A C O N I S , Linn. This specimen was given m e by Dr. Rean; a convict picked it up on the shore. I twice saw, but did not obtain, what appeared to be this fish whilst at the Andamans. Order LOPHOBRANCHIL Family SYNGNATHID^E. 233. SYNGNATHUS SPICIFER, Riipp. Ed-de, or Lah-a thd-dah, And. Microphis tenuis, Blyth. The native name of this species signifies a Turtle's tail, which the Pipefish is considered to resemble. |
