Supraorbital margin serrated, likewise a serrated ridge on either side of the posterior limb of the intermaxillary. Teeth villiform, outer row rather the largest. Fins. Upper pectoral rays silk-like. I had a very fine specimen, 9| inches long, collected for me by Lieut. Protheroe, and which I have placed in the British Museum. Diameter -£ of length of head, 1£ diameter from end of snout and apart. Head rather obtuse, superiorly flattened; lower jaw longest. Cleft of mouth extends to below the posterior third of the orbit. Teeth in villiform bands, with the outer row in the lower jaw somewhat enlarged. Scales ctenoid, those on the upper surface of the head and chest smaller than those on the body. The rows are irregularly arranged; there are thirty-four between the snout and the base of the first dorsal, they extend to before the eyes; there are fifteen rows between tbe second dorsal and anal. Colours. Brownish; dorsal, caudal, and anal spotted all over, their edges white. |
