[May 12, Sclater and Salvin in their excellent paper before referred to, divide the Hirundinidee into two subfamilies, as follows :- a. primarii primi pogonio externo valde serrate Psalidoprocninee. b. primarii primi pogonio externo lseri Hirundinince. These two subfamilies appear to contain 38 African species, belonging to 7 genera, viz.:- Psalidoprocninee 1 genus : 4 species. Hirundinince 6 genera: 34 species. Subfam. I. PSALIDOPROCNINEE. Above dark greenish black, deepest in the centre of the back and on the breast; quills deep black with a slight greenish lustre, the outer web of the first primary distinctly serrated ; tail dark greenish black, long, and deeply forked; bill black ; feet brown. Total length 5*4 inches, of wing 4*1, tail 3, tarsus 0*3, middle toe 0*3, lateral toes 0*2. Female. Similar to the male, but smaller and somewhat more |
