Genus Spirostrophus Saussure et Zehntner 1902 Spirostrophus Sauss. et Zehnt., Histoire Naturelle de Madagascar de Gradidier Paris. Gener otype; Spirostrophus naresi Pocock. One species was described by Dr. Chamberlin from the Philippine Islands. I found numer specimens of the species incipient species. ous or 45. in this collection which I Spirostrophus regard as dividable into three varieties socius Chamberlin Figs. 121-126. 1921 Annals & Magazine of Nat. Hist. Ser. 9, Vol. VII, p. 76. Locality: Philippines; Luzon, Mt. Makiling (C. F. Baker). Type: holotype Mus. Compo Zool. (No. 4782); paratype (No. 4783). This species resembles in general appearance and coloration specimens of Trigoniulus melanotelus also from Mt. Makiling in the Philippines and described by Dr. Chamberlin but is distinguished easily in lacking the dense striation characteristic of 1'. melanotelus. The pro zonites black, the dark annuli disappearing in the light color ventrally; the metazonites fulvous to ferruginous below, this color forming a complete band encircling. Collum black; anal seg ment black, the scutum narrowly bordered behind with ferruginous. Legs flavous. Position of sulcus marked clearly across dorsum by a series of horseshoe-shaped impres sions just in front of it; curved opposite the pore. Prozonites often showing numerous fine short, wavy, mostly vertical, striae over its covered part. Metazonites below the pore crossed by longitudinal striae, with some short curved striae just in front of sulcus. Head smooth, sul cus widely interrupted in the frontal region. Collum narrowed ventrad on each side, its inferior-anterior corner rounded, the infero-caudal angle subrectangular. (Fig. 121). Anal scutum just equalling the valves. The gonopods as shown in Figures 123 to 126. |
