Show 118 Of PHARMACY. an aflringent Tafie, and an agreeable Smell, which will not cryltallize, but melts in the open Air. 1f reétified Spirit of Wine is poured upon this, it will foon imbibe the Sulphur of Iron, and a fmall Portion of the vitriolic Salt, and f0 extract a Tinéture of Iron ofa golden Colour, 0f PHARMACY. 119 Tiné‘tures Which could not be made readily if at all, without them. Sometimes @z'ct-lz'me will greatly augment their Power, as is evident in the Method of making Soap-lye, for the more ready manufacturing of Soap. :1 fragrant Smell, and a fubafiringent Talte, which, for refioring the debilitated Tone of the Solids, has not its equal, and is of great Ule in Medicine. it is farther remarkable, that concentrated Spirit of Salt will raife a violent Efl'ervefcence when mixt with Oil or ltrong Spirit of Vitriol. SPIRIT of WINE reflzfea' is the Meir/imam of all ESSENTIAL Om, 0f PRECIPITATION. PRECIPITATION is the Method of caufing a Body difl'olved in any Mmflruum to fall to the Bottom of the Vefiel by the Addition of another of all VEGETABLE Resins, of GUMMY Rosms in a great Meafure; Subllzance. In this Operation there is little more required than to add the Matter which caufes Precipitation by Degrees, and to continue it no of all pure alkaline VOLATILE SALTS; of very dry fixed ALKALINE SALT ; of many Soars : of SL'LT'HURS united to alkaline Subflances; longer than it Occafions any of the Matter to be precipitated to fall to the Bottom. it will mix with 1/."ater5, "fines, and all Add: predated 17y Fermentation; but it will not touch Sea-fab. Salt-pane, Sal Ammunim, nor Pure Earth; not yet Meta/r, Semi-wttalr, Stones, or Gem. It has been the common they certainly will unite to one Body fooner than another, which is the Opinion, that this Mm/lruum will not difl'olve any Salts, which cannot be true; for if you take two Quarts of reé‘tierd Spirit of Wine, and ten Ounces of Salt of Tartar well calcined and very dry, and then draw of the Men/Imam, you will obtain a very penetrating Spirit impregnated with three Ounces of the Salt, and the remaining {even will appear in a liquid Form at the Bottom of the Matrafs, which Moilture it extracted from the Spirit ofWine. It will likewife diffolve fome neutral if 1m; is dillolved in Jena Farm, put Zlm‘ into the Solution, and the Salts, as the Sal diuretiriu. Moreover, if Spirit of Nitre and Spirit of Salt be dropt feparately upon two different Portions of pure rim/unis Sal flmmam'ac, to the Point of Saturation two neutral Salts will be produced, both which will readily unite with Spirit of Wine. But if you prepare the neutral Salt with Spirit af Vitriol and the {aid volatile Salt, it will by no Means mix with this Meryiruum, becaufe the Acid of this Tall is ofa fixed Nature. OILS will diflolvc Rosiw, GUMMY Rosms, VEGETABLE BALSAMS, SULPHURS, and BITUMENS. They will likewife unite wi‘»h Other 055 Mid Fat ; and yet in the Dz‘flilltztion of Twpmtbw and 147715". with various Degrees of Heat, feveral Oils may be produced of a dif- fcrent Weight. Thicknefs, Colour, and Purity, which Will not readily mix among themfelves. But what is firanger than all, Oils before they are boiled, and deprived of a [ruling Add, they will dillolve Mala/t. That they will unite with red Lead and Lillrar p, which are meta/ll: Ila One would imagine there was a Kind of Election in Men/imam. for Occafion of the Precipitation of the deferred Matter. Thus, if Silver is dillolved in Aqua/Farm, add Copper to the Solution, and the Silver will fink to the Bottom. So if Copper is diifolved in the fame Men/irmzm, and then lron be thrown in, the (.‘apper will be precipitated. Likewife, lmz will prefently be let at Liberty and fall down. Lafily, if Salt of Tartar is added to the Solution of 25:35, this will undergo the fame Fate as the former. Again, a ltrong fimi Arid will precipitate Bodies dif- folved In a more wolalz'le mid. Thus if Mother of Pearl, Coral, Crabs- eyes, or Egg-{hells are diffolved in Vinegar, Spirit of Vitriol poured on the Solution will make them fall to the Bottom. So alfo, if Spirit of Vitrlol Is added to the Sugar of Lead it will feparate the Lead from the Vinegar, with which it was made. But if this Mixture is difiilled, the Vinegar will be elevated, and the Lead will remain at the Bottom united with the Spirit of Vitriol. For the fame Reafon, flmple WamWill‘prempitate Rofim dillblved in reflified Spirit of Wine, for this more wdlmgly unites with Water than with Rofin. 0f CRYSTALLIZATION.
