Show 7167 Gibbons- c 5148 the road building from there to the Colorado river. Q From then on you hit the rim of the canyon? A No, it was a sort of dessert; what we call Hanson creek, we went down there for a few miles, then over the range to hit this pint where we delivered it on to the river. At that point where you delivered it on the river did you have to shoot a good deal of rock out there? A Yes, there is a tremendous dugway build there; it was cut away; cost several hundred dollars, a thousand dollars, maybe, or more, to shoot that off; then it was a dangerous way of getting down. Q Did you use black powder or dynamite? A Both. Q Just what is a dugway? A It is a grade along the side of a mountain, to cut down a place to give it elevation. Q In taking freight down this dugway did you attach capstans to it, or a rope on a windlass? A No, used what we called rough locks; I don't know whether you know what they are; a steel frame you run your wheels in, your hind wheels, then fasten with a chained to the front part of the wagon; that drags, and these heavy spikes out into the ground or rock or whether it may be. |
