Show Coffee Drinkers ".Rrpf e r r ed Page 1 of 307 COFFEE DRINKERS PREFERRED A Novel CHAPTER 1 Like almost everyone else working at Snow College, I had the perfect name for the job: Nephi Allred. My own particular moniker identifies me not only as a member of a particularly prolific, and in these parts ubiquitous, religious society but also as hailing from a long line of famous and well respected church members. The name Allred is as powerful to locals here as the national anthem is to others anywhere else in our country. You cannot challenge my pedigree. I come from faithful pioneer stock that reaches all the way back to the prophet's right hand. If you visit any of our church's many fine family history centers, you can verify everything that I am telling you. Don't panic. This story is not about The Church. And, as interesting a specimen of Utah manhood as I am, this story is not really even about me. Moby Dick was not about the sea, and yet Melville could not tell it without a flood of hundreds of pages filled with a fine sea froth and whale fat. Like any good church member, I consulted my bishop before embarking on this journey, and I was solemnly warned that if I were to mention the church by name I might be excommunicated. |
