I glanced up and down the street, perhaps I might look like I was waiting for a ride. My phone rang. "North." He hung up. I kept the phone to my ear, turned North and started walking along the boulevard. The phone was perfect cover. No one is suspicious about someone talking on the phone, he or she might simply be looking for better reception or just trying to get some privacy. It was early morning and the streets were almost empty anyway. I had parked my car in a two hour spot on the street that I would never have lucked into at any other hour of the day. I passed it and continued toward the corner and before I got there, Sariah appeared at the intersection about thirty feet in front of me. I slowed my gate. She crossed the street to the north. I didn't need to worry about making the light. Unless she went into one of the other casinos in this casino-crazy downtown, there was no way I would lose her. It would even be better to allow a little bit more distance between us. I had changed into a drab beige check patterned shirt so that I might be less memorable if I was spotted. I started reciting Allen Ginsberg's Howl into the silent phone at my ear, only because I was walking along the streets at dawn, even though I was no angel headed hipster. |
