I did not feel like I was dying a thousand deaths. I felt like I was living to fight another day. I drew a deep breath and hit the water. The stinging cold of the bay felt refreshing compared to the pain in my ribs. I swam straight down. Dale came in right after me. I swam straight for the jagged bottom of the submerged chain link fencing and slipped under it and waited on the other side. Dale, ever the special forces ex-marine was not even swimming. He was climbing directly down the outside of the fencing. Picture Spider-Man but underwater and heading downward, in darkness. He was upside down, and using his hands to pull him downward, one arm's length at a time as he searched the water for me. I wasn't fleeing from a regular human. I was fleeing from a flipping super hero. We were just inches a part, separated by only the chain link fencing when he looked me in the eyes through the blackness. He had found me. He smiled.
