Show Baseball Baseball 1966 saw an improving and upcoming Utah team make a strong showing in pre-season play. Though the Utes lost six of their first eight on a pre-season junket through California, the baseball men came back strongly to defeat Idaho State twice in a doubleheader and split with a strong Utah State team. All indications early in the season showed a potential WAC pennant winner, however, largely because of the excellent play of first baseman Steve Radulovich, second baseman Mike Beyeler, third baseman Jerry Pullman, and pitcher Dave Varvel. It was a season of ups and downs for veteran coach Press Summerhays' Utes. In 1966, the Utes forsook their old campus diamond of many years, packed up, and played their home games at well-manicured Derks Field. But on the bad side, ace hurler John Noriega signed a pro contract; thus leaving him ineligible for collegiate play.
