Show University debaters were (front row) Jim Jensen, Kay Israel, Nancy Denhalter, Jan Lund, Professor George Adamson, Scott Horman, Jan Sylvester, (row 2) Joy Ellis, Bonnie Thorup, Gloria Malmstrom, Joan Peterson, Bill Culverson, Grant Kesler, Craig Cook, Jeanne Weston, (row 3) Jack Welch, John Campbell, Brent Kranendonk, Reed Searle, Steve Hutchinson, Blaine Carlton, Joe Scott, and Lee Burnham. Head debate coach was George A. Adamson. Debate Concluding his thirty-seventh year as the University of Utah debate coach, George Adamson led his team through another successful year. Debaters traveled across the country winning honors in all forensic events. A major triumph of the year was the Senior Sweepstakes trophy at the Western Speech Association Tournament, the largest held fall quarter. Again at Linfield College Utah debaters took top awards in the Senior Division. But the junior members of the team weren't to be outdone. They garnered trophies at the Brigham Young University Tournament, Santa Barbara and at Linfield College. Aiding Coach Adamson were five student managers and three assistant debate coaches: Richard Birrell, Gay Daleabout and Lawrence Silvey. Once again the debate team, a heterogeneous group of scholastically able and vocally talented students, brought honor and respect to the university. 90 |
