The summer of 1965 saw the successful completion of the University's 18th annual Summer Festival under the direction of Dr. Keith Engar. Following a tradition of high musical quality and excitement, this year's Summer Festival staff presented to the community two productions of undisputed excellence and popularity. The converted University Stadium played host first to Verdi's Aida. The story of the love between Radames, captain of the Egyptian army, and Aida, an Ethiopian slave, was movingly portrayed by Robert Moulson and Maria Ferriero. They were joined by a talented cast of student singers and dancers to make this starlight opera a musical feast to many thousands of people. Exploding upon the heels of Aida was Jerome Robbins' production of West Side Story, starring Larry Kert from the original Broadway show and Marlys Watters. In many ways paralleling the theme of Aida, West Side Story shouted forth with Leonard Bernstein's brilliant music, the tale of two young lovers separated by conflicting groups. |
