Show Faculty Honors Each year the Utonian reserves a special section for particular members of the University's faculty, men and women who have made distinguished and unique contributions in their field of study and to the campus community. From those nominated by the department, eight people of outstanding merit are selected for final honors. Professors of Languages, Mathematics, Nursing, Meteorology, Pharmacy, Geography, Chemical Engineering, and Sociology are this year's honored. Dr. E. A. Swinyard Professor of Pharmacology "Today we are going to discuss one of the most exciting events in history: the discovery of insulin." This is how the lecture began, and for the next fifty minutes Dr. E. A. Swinyard, professor of pharmacology and Director of Research for the College of Pharmacy, created a little curiosity within the minds of some thirty-five students. For almost thirty years - eleven at Idaho State University and eighteen at the University of Utah after receiving one of the first two Ph.D.'s given by this school - Dr. Swinyard has been observing and participating in the development of a multitude of new drugs which have literally saved lives. Fascinated by this field, he calls Pharmacology "the universal language of health sciences." Dr. Jacob Geerlings Professor of Classical Greek An immensely interesting person, Dr. Jacob Geerlings believes in having fun with his classes, because "if he doesn't his students don't." A graduate of the University of Michigan, he came to the University of Utah in 1929 after serving as a Graduate Assistant at Western Reserve. Since that time he has been both an inspiration to his students and an asset to the University. Dr. Geerlings, a professor of classical Greek and Ancient History, is especially well equipped for this position as he has spent much time in the Middle East. Dr. Geerlings takes an extra-personal interest in students. His philosophy concerning them is: "You gain much more from trusting them than from suspecting them." 33 |
