Show ¦ Dr. Henry H. Frost Professor of Sociology Doctor Shih-Kung Kao, Professor of Meteorology, has been on this campus since 1960. During this time, in addition to teaching, he has worked on a grant from the National Science Foundation which is a continuous study on Atmospheric Turbulence and Diffusion. The application of this research is to measure pollution and the amount of radioactive material in the atmosphere. His group measures how much fall-out diffuses into the air over Utah from the Nevada testings. They also predict the concentration of fall-out over the United States from nuclear explosions throughout the world. Dr. Kao and his group have presented papers before national and international organizations on this subject. Among the numerous associations Dr. Kao belongs to is the Royal Meteorological Society of Great Britain. Dr. Kao stated that this work is very rewarding for its contributions toward science and also society. Dr. Frost has been at the University since 1939. He came here from Berkeley where he taught, and got his B.A., M.A. and Ph. D. A rather versatile instructor, he has conducted classes in every phase of Sociology, but presently is primarily occupied in teaching theory classes. Six years ago, Dr. Frost was one of the initiators in the use of closed circuit T.V. for teaching introductory Sociology classes. He feels television teaching gives a much more personal form of instruction than the present large classes. It seems evident that Dr. Frost sees the importance of being oriented to the student. He firmly believes that students "aren't holes into which teachers pour information." School "should be a disturbing experience, one which alters the student's outlook" and guides him to a more realistic appraisal of life. Dr. Shih-Kung Kao Professor of Meteorology 36 |
