Show Spotlight on the South For many years, the South has seemed to be surrounded by an air of mystery and thus appears to have been viewed with less than complete understanding by non-Southerners. The image of the South has suffered unduly as a result of longstanding misconceptions. Thus the Spotlight committee felt that the Spotlight program could . . . and should . . . serve as a vehicle for the open discussion of the American South in its many aspects. Such a presentation did in some measure help break down barriers to understanding, barriers which have prevented a just appreciation of Southern problems and the Southern point of view. Spotlight on the American South was a year-long series of events designed to help bring into focus the historical, cultural, social, geographical, political and other aspects of Southern life. Polly Stewart, Spotlight chairman, gives the opening address, Fall Quarter. /iewer reads with avid interest the opening Southern exhibit. 130 |
