Show Dr. C. E. Burgess Professor of Mathematics Directly after receiving his doctorate at Ohio State University in 1947, Dr. H. Bowman Hawkes came to the University of Utah to organize and head the new department of Geography. His accomplishments since then include two presidencies of regional geographers' associations, a Fullbright Lectureship in Europe, and several publications. However, Dr. Hawkes deserves recognition more for his interest in the University, the respect he has gained from his faculty, and the outstanding students he has turned out through the years. His research takes place during the evenings and on weekends, weekdays being reserved strictly for teaching and consultation. Dr. Hawkes has turned down several offers from larger schools to leave the University, and we hope he continues to turn them down in the future. Professor C. E. Burgess is an outstanding teacher in an outstanding department. With special interests in topology - often called "rubber-sheet" geometry - and the foundations of geometry, he strives to develop independence and originality in his students. Mathematics is the development of new topics and, as such, it requires creativity. Dr. Burgess cannot teach creativity, but he can and does inspire it. It has been said that music is emotional. The same idea can be applied to mathematics. Discovery in this field is capable of producing immense satisfaction and delight, and the association with a person such as Dr. Burgess, who has taught for 14 years in addition to having worked at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, affords a student the opportunity to discover new things. In mathematics a great teacher is simply one who can motivate students, since, according to Dr. Burgess, mathematics is a motivated abstraction. Dr. H. Bowman Hawkes Professor of Geography 35 |
