Show In three basin States, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Illinois, per capita income payments exceeded the United States average in both 1939 and 1949, while in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, per capita income payments were considerably lower than the average for the Nation (table 2). Industrially and agriculturally, the basin is one of the richest in the United States. Its land and mineral resources, if intelligently managed, will con- tinue to be a source of wealth for its people and the Nation indefinitely. Present Forms of Resource Use Manufacturing.-Large and extensively devel- oped coal fields and cheap water transportation are two of the factors which have contributed to the growth of industry in this basin. The out- standing development is that of the iron and steel works centering at Pittsburgh and Youngstown and extending up the Monongahela River and down the Ohio. Approximately 19,500 manufacturing establish- ments were reported for this basin in the 1947 Census of Manufacturers. All major industry groups are represented in this highly diversified manufacturing area. Principal manufactured goods include products of iron and steel plants, rolling mills, blast furnaces, foundries and machine shops; processed foods; chemical products; elec- 1 Virginia has only 5 counties in the basin. (See map of the basin.) 3 Income payments from agriculture include net income of farm proprietors (including change in value of inven- tories of crops and livestock), farm wages, and net rents to landlords living on farms. It does not include the value of farm products used on farms. 3 Government income includes the pay of State, local, and Federal civil employees, pay of the armed forces, military family allowances, veterans' benefits, interest payments to individuals, mustering-out payments, public assistance, and relief. 4 All other sources include mining, fishing, forestry, transportation, power and gas utilities, dividends, rents, etc. Source: Survey of Current Business, August 1950. trical machinery; railroad and other transportation equipment; furniture; ceramics; timber products; and many others. The industries of the basin employ about 13 percent of the production workers of the Nation. Manufacturing employment increased 59 percent between 1939 and 1947, and manufacturing pro- vided job opportunities for 1.5 million persons in 1947. The States north of the river are, in general, more highly industrialized than those south of it, although West Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee have one or more important manufacturing centers located in this basin.
