Show Hardwood forests predominate in the headwater area, pine in the southern part with hardwoods in the stream bottoms, and pine-hardwood elsewhere. Virtually all the forest has been cut over at least once, and what remains standing is young growth timber which varies widely in size, quality, and volume. Despite the reduction in forest resources, rapid growth of many young stands has sustained a high output of timber products. Population: Distribution and Growth About 1,375,000 people live in the Alabama- Coosa River Basin. In addition, the cities of Birmingham and Atlanta lie just outside its boun- daries and influence its activities. The population is predominantly rural.
