Show While the limited supply of wildlife habitat is dwindling every year, interest in hunting and fish- ing is increasing. License sales have nearly doubled since 1939. Hunting and fishing are pop- ular forms of outdoor recreation and, if the de- mand of these sports is to be met adequately, it is necessary that the resources be increased and that habitats on which game are dependent be main- tained at their present level or increased. There is need for accelerated programs of pollution abate- ment. There is also need for closer review by fish and wildlife agencies of drainage proposals planned or subsidized by Federal agencies. The Fish and Wildlife Service is interested in establishing a migratory waterfowl refuge in West Virginia. Preliminary investigations of proposed flood control impoundments indicate that one of these might be suitable for refuge purposes. The establishment of a waterfowl refuge in central or northern Kentucky outside the mountain regions is also desired. Consideration has been given to establishing a migratory waterfowl refuge in an abandoned drainage and strip-mine district in Greene County, Ind. Existing fish culture stations are being expanded, repaired, and modified from time to time. A large expansion is anticipated for the Hebron, Ohio, sta- tion, and improvements in the water supply of the White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., station are con- templated. Existing hatcheries within the basin have been influenced by water development pro- grams. The farm pond program and the increas- ing number of flood control reservoirs have in- creased the demands on the production capabilities of the various stations. Expansion of hatchery fa- cilities is needed to close the gap between the de- mand for fish and the production potential of these hatcheries. 654 |
