C, water supply system. 3 Operated by the Potomac Light & Power Co. from 1.8 million to 3.2 million kilowatts in the same period. At the end of 1949, the installed generating capacity of these utilities amounted to 2 million kilowatts, consisting of 1.6 million kilowatts in fuel- electric plants and 393,000 kilowatts in hydro- electric installations. Studies show that the poten- tial hydroelectric power in the Potomac Basin could be utilized in the area by 1970 and that, in addi- tion, a substantial amount of new fuel-electric capacity would be required to supply base load requirements. Considering reasonable transmission distances, an even larger area is a potential market for Potomac Basin hydroelectric power. It might include all or substantial parts of West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, the District of Columbia, Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Facilities in Construction and Authorized No hydroelectric developments, either Federal or non-Federal, are under construction in the basin. No projects including hydroelectric power facili- ties have been authorized for construction. Situation at the End of the Present Program No programs are presently in progress which would alter the amount of hydroelectric power pro- duced in the watershed. 911610-51- -39 587 |
