The common malaria carrier in the Tennessee Valley is the Anopheles mosquito. In 1933 blood sample tests made in the problem areas along the Tennessee River reservoirs showed evidence of malaria among roughly 30 percent of the population. The malaria control problem confronted TVA immediately. In the early 1930's, the disease was still one of the most important public health prob- lems of the southeastern United States. Creation of a chain of artificial lakes in a region where ma- laria was already serious presented an unprece- dented control problem.
