Show 2. Land Inundation and Population Displacement The Problem The acquisition of property in reservoir areas as related to displacement of persons, local govern- mental tax losses, and payment to local governments in lieu of taxes. The Situation The reservoir program for the Missouri Basin, as proposed in 1949, contemplated 151 reservoirs inundating some 2.5 million acres. The distribu- tion of these reservoirs and the lands to be flooded are: Area Corps of Engineers Number Thousand Bureau of Reclamation Number Thousand acres Total Number Thousand acres Upper watershed. They live mostly in nearby villages and provide services to farm people. These families are not included in any of the totals shown. Nearly half of the farm families on proposed reservoir sites are in the lower basin, although only one-fourth of the acreage of reservoir sites is in this area. There are about four farm families for each thousand acres in these sites. In the upper water- shed there is only about one family per thousand acres, while the figures for the western and eastern plains are 1.3 and 1.5, respectively. For the whole 230 |
