The amount reserved for flood storage on January 1 is 1,635,000 acre-feet. During the winter some flood waters accumulate in the reservoir, but operation is so planned that on March 15 the available flood control storage is 1,377,000 acre-feet. Hiwassee, Chatuge, and Nottely Dams on the Hiwassee and Fontana Dam on the Little Tennessee provide additional flood control storage to protect the reach of the river between Knoxville and Chat- tanooga and farther downstream. Douglas Dam on the French Broad River above Knoxville is the second largest reservoir in the upper river basin. Its operation provides flood control storage of 1,311,000 acre-feet on January 1, and 1,019,000 acre-feet on March 15. Cherokee, Watauga, and South Holston Dams on the Holston River also regulate the flow of the river at Knoxville. The three main river reservoirs above Chatta- nooga,15 although not having large storage, give great assistance by regulating the flood inflow from the area below the tributary dams. Since the sys- tem was essentially completed in 1944, reductions in stage of as much as 12.7 feet have been made at Chattanooga. The following tabulation indicates that total estimated reductions in potential flood losses at Chattanooga for the 15-year period from 1936 to date amount to about 45 million dollars. * Chickamauga, Watts Bar, Fort Loudoun. 721 |
