Show Chapter 4 Programs for Additional Improvements In contrast to the situation with regard to exist- ing facilities, the additional major structures under construction or planned in the Columbia Basin, nearly all will have multiple-purpose functions. If incidental recreation benefits are considered, all projects may be considered multiple-purpose. The following list indicates the outlines of the major multiple-purpose structures in the programs: Projects Authorized or Under Construction Flood Control, Navigation, Power: Priest Rapids, Wash. Irrigation and Domestic Water Supply: Lewiston Orchards, Idaho Irrigation Private construction of irrigation facilities is on a small scale, and is largely confined to rehabilitation of existing works and to new installations on exist- ing farms. Particularly significant is the develop- ment of sprinkler irrigation on individual farms where water is readily available from streams or shallow wells in the Willamette Valley and a few areas west of the Cascade Mountains. Three Federal irrigation projects are under con- struction: Columbia Basin Project (Washington) by the Bureau of Reclamation anticipates the eventual irrigation of about a million acres. Total cost is estimated at 773 million dollars, of which irrigation allocations are 553 million dollars. Lewiston Orchards Project (Idaho) by the Bureau of Reclamation will furnish supplementary water to 3,838 acres at an estimated cost of $654,000 for irrigation. Palisades Project (Idaho). Bureau of Recla- mation estimates cost will be 21.7 million dollars for furnishing supplemental water to 650,000 acres of land. On the Boise Project (Idaho) work is being con- cluded on the Anderson Ranch Reservoir and on the Payette Division. On the Yakima Project 17 |
