Show Martin Bezyack grazes the chin of an opponent during the intramural championship boxing matches. Bezyack, of the AFROTC, went on to win the 155 lb. division. It looks like a crab match as Varselle Weaver of Sigma Chi and Joe Kine, AFROTC, mix it up in the 177 lb. wrestling championship. Kine emerged as champ.Over a thousand athletic-minded men roaming the Ute campus found their closest contact with the contributions of the ancient Greeks in athletic competition. The Intramural program, operating under energetic Tony Simone's charge, saw this big male segment of the University battle for what at times seemed to be blood, although it was strictly on a friendly basis. With 13 separate sports ranging from billiards and swimming to track and volleyball, every Greek organization on campus, several independent groups, and a swarm of small teams from the dorms entered play. Big problem was with the AFROTC; everybody complained because the "fly-boys" entered so many teams, but that only spiced competition. However, with a split in independent and affiliated competition, the program grew even bigger. Pi Kappa Alpha, perennial powerhouse of the Greeks, grabbed an early lead and retained it throughout the whole year, while the AFROTC led independent point-getters. Probably the highlight of the year was the big night of boxing and wrestling finals in the Gym. Bill Metcalf, an Indie, pulled a spectacular feat in winning the heavyweight boxing and wrestling crowns. In another match, gridder Lou Mele TKO'd Sigma Chi's Bob Norton in one of the evening's top slugfests. Other top winners included Martin Starr, Andy Melville, Joe Kine, and Jim Marshall. The billiards contests attracted over 150 contestants, with Sigma Chi, strong contender for top all-year laurels, coming out on top. But despite the aches of out-of-shape legs and flabby stomach muscles, it was the greatest. Anyway, it's more fun playing than watching.Mixing it up at long range were two sluggers in the I-M boxingtourney.
