Show GolfEleven driving divoters shooting over the windswept fairways of the Fort Douglas links early in the 1954 year held the key to another spring sport's place in Utah athletic prominence. These were the propsects for golf team. Western Division champions in 1953, the Skins had also tied for second in conference play under the mentoring of Pres Summerhays. Taking up where his colleague left off, another football coach, Pete Carlston, took over the golf coaching duties for 1954.Endowed with six returning linksters from last year's squad, Carlston looked for the 1954 season to be one of the best in recent years. Such men as Doug Lund, three times Utah Junior Open champ, and Jim Dunn and Gary Peck, also former winners of Utah Open crowns, gave the Utes lots of experience. Other returning lettermen were Dick Parmley, George Schneiter, Bill Metcalf, and Bob Pearson.Opening the 1954 season with a lop-sided 17-1 walk-away over Montana, the Skins next scalped BYU's Cougars by a 13& to 4K tally. Returning to Montana, they dropped a 14-3 contest. To find the winning four-man combination was the rub, but the old Scottish sport still saw its Ute devotees coming through with more than their share of the trophies.Brent EagerDick Parmley:Utah Opponent Score4 Montana 1412& USAC 5fc10 BYU 89% BYU 8%8 USAC 1010 Montana 8178 |
