Show Section autumn . . . came September . , . came the day. And hilltop doors swung open on another school year . . . Came the long lines of bobbing heads, some of them wizened to the ritual, staring straight ahead . . . others-the green-capped ones-jerking, twisting, open-mouthed with eagerness, shifty-eyed with cautious apprehension . . . they came-on schedule-to bordering Park and Library lawns . . . those long, long lines flecked with green.. . . disclosed, by closer viewing ... a differentiation (not alone of sexes) ... a grouping into species ... or genera ... or CLASS . . . four in all ... each with an attitude or two peculiarly its own . . . such as:SELF-ESTEEM-the looking back on four fast, full, un-forgetful years ... or EAGERNESS-the anticipation of longer, warmer days and summer's June . . . Graduation . . . the stadium . . . handshakes . . . diploma . . . Diploma: merit of four years' fortitude and sleepless nights. For the SENIORS, a goal at hand, soon to be realized . . . though not without Forfeit ... or ... Reward: A lot of their illusions dissipated, a lot of their dreams lost . . . but - if more cynical - also more realistic - facing the future with confidence and purpose, eager to provide their world with the leadership it so desperately would need . . .the JUNIORS . . . clothed now in a certain COMPLACENCY, with requirements behind them . . . expected to pursue fields of interest . . . some, with life-patterns already established . . . others requiring another quarter or three . . . before they would recognize the necessity of choice. This for them . . . the year of decision ... the year to resolve Where to Go and What to Do.METAMORPHOSIS ... the SOPHOMORE class . . . from high school heroes and "green" freshmen to vanguards of the Union, red and white blood brothers tracing with pride their ancestry on the Ute family tree . . . donning plaid vests and Windsor ties to mete out to incoming feeshmen the same stern discipline they had, themselves, resisted so vigorously the year before ... acquiring a sophistication in this, their second year, that told the campus, "You are partly mine ... I have earned my right to belong. . . ."FRESHMAN: Lowest form of life . . . finding himself in a medium-rich, warm, conducive to growth ... a child on the bottom stair . . . with only one way to go-forward and up . . . flooding the campus-as embryo doctor, nurse, dentist, engineer, teacher, scientist, social service worker, foreign diplomat, admiral, general, party-goer-with a FRESHNESS that unknowingly rocked the pre-set smugness of his elders and put garlic in Hoyo's soup.FreslimenSopliomoresJuniorsSeniors |
