Show Tke UtesStartStrondBill Maxwell lets fly with a short shot similar to those that made himone of the Utes' top point-gathering aces. Waiting for the reboundwith Bob Fulton are Tom Rhone and Bill Jones of Denver.Finding a combination that could win ball games was the first order in Uteville. Built around Alden Lewis and Bob Fulton, the only lettermen, it was a wide open race for several sophomores and juniors. Morris Buckwalter, Bill Maxwell, and Pete Dow, sophomores, and Roger Tonnesen and Eddie Pepple, juniors, seemed to be the inside men Gardner needed for his combination. The Utes opened their season by dropping a two-game series to Southern California by respective counts of 54-48 and 65-55, but after that they were on the way. Winning five out of their next seven games, they surprised Cec Baker, the Utah Aggies, and the entire Skyline Conference by knocking off the Farmers 71-58 in their first conference outing. Bill Maxwell, a sensation in Utah prep ranks, suddenly blossomed as the team's top rebound expert, and Eddie Pepple and Roger Tonnesen helped provide the speed that was synonymous with Gardner-style ball. That Utah had a top coach was obvious. In the Redskin's 59-52 victory over Loyola of Los Angeles and the 71-58 Aggie victory, the whole difference in the two teams, was the Ute coach. His strategy proved that even with limited material, Utah would be a strong team to cope with in the Skyline chase.Bill MaxwellGuardAlden LewisForward |
