Show SectionW\\ benched muscles, bruised limbs, throbbing aches in the most tempered physique . . . exultation, achievement, competitive flame in every sinew that had broken the tape or thrown the final basket ... all THIS . . . together with the cheering, the heartbreak, the frantic watching from bleacher seats. . . .From gym and hardcourts to the diamond on Hempstead, the Utes were BUILDING . .. . building strong, sound bodies, competitive spirit, ability to win, and wisdom to lose well . . . these were the men all Uteville watched . . . the outstanding few . . . the Varsity . . . passing, grappling, breaking, sprinting for the intercollegiate laurel . . . BUILDING for themselves and their university ... a name, a recognition, an honor, which in some measure, compensated for the many fatiguing, aching hours of practice and squad drill.Initiating the parade of physical prowess during '53-'54 and Leading to another Skyline CHAMPIONSHIP, were the iron men of "gridiron" and "pigskin" . . . followed by other warriors-the "casaba" men, the "bucket pitchers," drawing a fieldhouse of loyal fans to cheer them on to Glory ... meanwhile, the so-called "minor" sports-wrestling, swimming, and perennially-popular skiing-saw Utah men pitting their skill . . . then rising above the very BEST . . . Came spring-baseball, track, tennis, golf- and with it a few last hectic weeks in which to reach a peak of readiness for strenuous contests that would spell more Conference CHAMPIONSHIPS and culminate another year in the Scrapbook of Utah athletics.. . . for all the respect Utes gave the block "U" and the Adonis who proudly wore it ... playing together was, first and foremost, an event for all to have a part in ... interest, not skill, being the only requisite. Contending that they too had biceps and tendoachilli-though soft and aching ones-many cast their lot with intramural football and basketball or WJRA swimming. Finding themselves too confined by classroom and library, others chose to spend their sunny winter afternoons inhaling crisp, rarified air on Alta's snowy steeps."Athletics" ... a Greek expression epitomizing the Greek virtue of a sound mind in a sound body . . . indeed a vital commodity in the life of the Utes ... as they "built" for the future....FootballBasketballWinter SportsSpring SportsIntramuralsATHLETICS |
