Show Ski TeamUtah's wizards of the waxed boards, under the watchful eyes of Dr. John Squires, were skiing among the fastest company in the nation. After taking third place in the NCAA ski meet in 1953, they lost such men as Dick Mitchell and Jay Barrus. But the 1954 season started with a brighter outlook than many had hoped and ended with a sixth place spot in the NCAA team championships. With a team built around such returnees as Bicknell Robbins, Rich Brewer, and Darrell (Pinky) Robison, plus several newcomers, this winter sport started off fast. Competing with four mountain states schools, the Utes walked off with a first place team trophy at the Western Division of the Rocky Mountain Ski association meet. Bicknell Robbins won the jumping and cross-country events, while Pinky Robison coped the downhill and slalom races to make a clean sweep for the Utes.Redskin skiers next swept to second position in the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate ski conference competition held at Logan's Beaver mountain. They were battling such schools as Wyoming, Denver, Colorado University and Utah State. This meet, which was the qualifying contest for NCAA competition, saw the Utes take the downhill and slalom races on a team basis, while placing second in jumping and fourth in cross country. Individually, Pinky Robison again sped to a first in the slalom and grabbed second in the downhill. The NCAA championships at Reno saw the men from Utah's snowy slopes take the team first prize in downhill racing for the fourth straight year of NCAA competition.
