Show Redskin BasketballThe only things about the 1954 Utah basketball team that weren't new were the uniforms and a couple of one-year lettermen, Bob Fulton and Alden Lewis. And so with an outlook somewhat less brilliant than the days when the Utes ranked as a national power, Coach Jack Gardner wasted no time in bringing a completely new style of ball to the Ute field-house hardwoods. He was out to win, and everyone knew it. With a tough 26-game schedule facing his cagers, there was a lot to be learned, and not much time to teach it. But the mild-spoken, grinning gentleman who had been accustomed to winning teams started the uphill job of re-building with the enthusiasm that won tremendous response from the players.With Jack Gardner behind the wheel, Utah hoop fans witnessed what may be the beginning of another colorful and prominent era in the chapters of Utah basketball fortunes. The "winning" habit, an expected part of past University of Utah athletics, continued on through long winter afternoons of work and sweat as basketball took a solid grip on the winter sports scene.161 |
