Annual Report 1991. Salt Lake City: Author, Chart 3. The number of child abuse and neglect victims in Utah increased between 1983 and 1991 (Table 63, Figure 52). This may be indicative of more public awareness about child abuse, an increase in child abuse investigators and reported cases (more investigators will find more cases), or an increase in the number of actual victims. Information is also available that cites child abuse/neglect by Figure 52 __________________________________ "investigations" instead of "victims" in Utah (reported in Table 64). The number of Utah investigations of child abuse/neglect are used for comparison with the U.S. number of cases, because Utah law requires an investigation of each reported case. The number of child abuse investigations also increased in Utah between 1983 and 1991. .5 12000 -r 3 o 8000 ¦- 4000-- Child Abuse/Neglect Victims in Utah 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 Reported Child Neglect and Abuse Cases (Rates per l.ooo Population) National data on child abuse are available only Table 64 through 1987 (Table 64). Both Utah and the U.S. increased in the total number of reported cases and investigations of child abuse. The Utah:U.S. ratio comparison shows that Utah improved, by a substantial margin, as compared to the nation between 1983 and 1987. Reported child abuse cases were higher for Utah than the nation between 1983 and 1985, but were lower in 1986 and 1987. Source: Utah - Utah Department of Human Services, Division of Family Services. Therefore Utah investigations data were used for comparisons with reports on the national level. Rates were calculated using census data.
