For comparative purposes the U.S. three-year average can be compared to Utah's five-year average, although the rates are not completely comparable. Source: Utah Cancer Registry. (1992, Sept.) Cancer in Utah 1966-1990. Salt Lake City: Author, p. 34. Utah is lower than the U.S. in the total incidence of and mortality due to lung cancer. Utah and the nation have seen increases in the overall incidence rates of lung cancer between 1966 and 1990, although Utah's incidence rate declined slightly between the periods of 1981-1985 and 1986-1990, while the U.S. rate increased for each time period presented (Table 18, Incidence Rate). Total death rates increased in Utah and the nation between 1966 and 1990. Utah's death rates increased slightly for each period presented, as have the nation's (Table 18, Mortality Rate). The Cancer Registry suggests that Utah's lower death and incidence rates of lung cancer may be largely explained by lower use of tobacco products in Utah.1 Figure 14 Figure 15 Lung and Bronchus Cancer Incidence Utah US IS O »-i < 60 j 50--40--30--20 10 0 1971- 1976- 1981- 1986-1975 1980 1985 1990 1s ¦c JS ¥8 Lung and Bronchus Cancer Mortality Utah DUS & = 50T 40--30-20 i 10 0 1 1971-1975 1976- 1980 1981- 1985 1986- 1990 tSource: Utah Cancer Registry.
