Utah is below the U.S. median in the percentage of population reporting having had too much to drink before driving. From 1986 to 1990 Utah saw improvement in its comparison with the nation in drinking and driving (Table 55). In 1986 Utah was close to the U.S. median in both categories, and dropped to well below the median in subsequent years. From 1986 to 1990 those 18 years and older who reported driving after drinking dropped from 3.4% to 1.3%, or about two-thirds (Figure 42). Equally impressive in their rate of decline were men between the ages of 18 and 34, whose rate decreased from 8.9% in 1986 to 2.9% in 1990: a percentage decrease of 67% (Figure 43). The U.S. median state also shows a general decline between 1986 and 1990, although there was some fluctuation for men ages 18 to 34.
