Both male and female adolescent suicide death rates are consistently higher for Utah than for the nation, and the male adolescent suicide rate was higher than suicides across all ages (Table 36). Adolescent male suicide rates increased for Utah between 1970 and 1988, while the U.S. rate increased through 1987, and dropped in 1988. Adolescent female suicide death rates for Utah and the U.S. increased from 1970 to 1987, and than declined slightly. The Utah:U.S. comparison shows Utah rates to vary considerably for both males and females with the U.S. rates. Table 37 shows the total number of adolescent suicides. Overall, the number of adolescent suicides increased between 1960 and 1990. Of particular concern is the general increase in the number of adolescents between 10-14 who commit suicide (Table 37).
