The 1989 statistics were taken from a survey commissioned by the Utah Department of Human Services and conducted by Dan Jones and Associates. To ensure comparability the Utah Household Survey used was modeled after the U.S. Household Survey. "Regular use" refers to use of a substance at least once within a thirty-day period. This information specifically relates to adults ages 18-25. Figures 47 and 48 compare Utah with the nation for three different substances over a 10-year period. Marijuana use decreased steadily in both Utah and the US from 1979 to 1989. Cocaine use declined nationally for the 10-year period, while Utah's cocaine use remained the same between 1979 and 1982, and increased slightly in 1989. Hallucinogen use in Utah and the U.S. declined sharply between 1979 and 1982, but then increased sharply between 1982 and 1989 in Utah (Figure 47). 48 RISK FACTORS |
