Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. 22(53). Atlanta, GA: U.S. Government Printing Office, pp. 56-60. 'Utah incidence rates were computed from reports provided by the Utah Department of Health and population estimates provided by the Utah Population Estimates Committee. ^ 1951-1990 incidence rates were computed using total new cases and population estimates as reported in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. This discussion begins the set of indicators measuring illness rather than death. The incidence of measles decreased in Utah and the nation from 1951 to the 1980's. Measles appeared to be contained from 1981 through 1988, but then increased in both Utah and the nation (Table 41, Figure 29). There does not appear to be any consistent trend in the Utah:U.S. comparison, in part reflecting the problems of comparisons based upon small numbers and the year-to-year variability in infectious diseases. The incidence of measles by age (Table 42) reveals that it is particularly prevalent in the younger population, primarily those age 19 and younger. However, since 1989 there has been an increase in the number of older people infected with measles. From 1980 to 1988 there were very few cases in the 20 and over age group, but in 1989 and 1991 the incidence in this age group increased. The resurgence of measles is most likely due to a decline in the number of children under the age of two who receive immunizations (Public Health section, p. 59).
