Show NOTES AND NEWS Who's News Utah Medical Association The new UMA President is George W. Middleton, MD, a urologist in Salt Lake City. Dr. Middleton has been active in UMA as Treasurer, Legislative Committee Chair, Vice-Speaker and Speaker of the House of Delegates. He has chaired two councils, and currently serves as UMA representative to the Health Cost Management Foundation. A graduate of Cornell University Medical College, Dr. Middleton completed an internship and surgery residency at the New York Hospital/Cornell Medical Center and a urology residency at the University of Virginia Medical Center. J. Leon Sorenson has been executive vice president of the Utah Medical Association for more than a decade. He is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Association and for carrying out the policy decisions of the Board of Trustees and House of Delegates. Before coming to the Utah Medical Association in 1979, Mr. Sorenson spent most of his career on Utah's Capitol Hill. He was director of legislative research for the Utah State Legislature from 1975 to 1979, and prior to that had been executive director of the Utah Constitutional Revision Commission. He currently serves on the board of the American Association of Medical Society Executives. Mr. Sorenson holds a master's degree in Public Administration from Brigham Young University. Mark Fotheringham has been Director of Communications for the Utah Medical Association since 1990. As such, his major responsibilities include Public and Media Relations, Membership Development, Publications, Issues Management, Conference Coordination, CME Accreditation and Computer Operations. He was originally hired by the UMA in late 1987. Before coming to UMA, Mr. Fotheringham was the Public Relations Manager for Pioneer Valley Hospital in West Valley City. He has also been a newspaper reporter for the Davis County Clipper in Bountiful. Mr. Fotheringham graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Utah in 1982 with a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication. Val Bateman is Director of Government Relations for the Utah Medical Association. He is the UMA's chief lobbyist, and tracks economic trends and government regulations affecting the medical profession. Before joining the Association in 1991, he worked as policy analyst for Health Facility Licensure (regulating health care facilities), Utah Department of Health, and as liaison with the twelve local health departments in Utah. Prior to his four years with the Health Department, Mr. Bateman spent 21 years with the U.S. Air Force, in health care administration. Utah Hospital Association Charles L. Doane is the Chairman of the Board for the Utah Hospital Association, serving a one-year term. He is the Director of Government Relations for Intermountain Health Care. Mr. Doane was a Utah state legislator, and has been very involved in community activities. He holds a bachelor's degree from Brigham Young University, and completed the ISPHA program in hospital administration at the University of Minneapolis. The UHA President and CEO is Richard B. Kinnersley. In this capacity, Mr. Kinnersley serves as the chief spokesman and advocate of the hospital industry in Utah, representing 54 acute and specialty care hospitals. He has served as Director of Regional Services for the University of Utah Medical Center, President and CEO of a health maintenance organization, and as President of the Utah Hospital Association and the Hospital Cooperative of Utah from 1978 to 1986.
