Certain drugs are used more frequently by young adults ages 18-25 years old in Utah than in the nation (Table 59). Sedative use increased steadily in Utah, while decreasing in the U.S. Tranquilizer use increased between 1982 and 1989 in Utah, while decreasing nationwide. Utah is below the national average for those age 26 and older for marijuana use, but higher for pain medication use (Table 60, Figure 49). The years 1989 and 1988 were chosen as indicators because they represent the closest available comparisons between Utah and the U.S. more than doubled between 1979 and 1988, and increased slightly in the nation. Amphetamine use declined between 1979 and 1989 in Utah, while nationally it increased between 1979 and 1982 but then decreased between 1987 and 1988.
