Utah and the nation have both declined in the percentage of low birth weight babies since 1970. The national percentage of low birth weight babies dropped below 7% in 1979 and remained at that level until 1989. Utah dropped below 6% in 1973, and has remained between 5.2% and 5.7% since that time. There has been little variation in the total number of low birth weight babies since the mid-1970's nationally, as well as the early 1970's in Utah. Utah's Health: An Annual Review 1993 53 |
