Utah may appear to be an exception to this finding, since it enjoys a relatively high level of health despite having a lower per capita income than the national average. Per capita personal income is calculated by dividing total personal income by total population. In Utah, total personal income is averaged over many large, young families, which lowers per capita income figures. When per capita income is based only on an adult population, Utah improves from 75% of the national average to 88%x (based on 1990 data). Personal income per household shows Utah at 89% of the national average in 1990. Utah's per capita income as a percentage of the US per capita income showed a narrowing between 1969 and 1978, from 79.5% in 1969 to 83.2% in 1978. After 1978, however, the gap between Utah and the nation began to widen again (Table 7, Figure 8). Another factor contributing to Utah's lower personal income figures is the relatively low level of wages. The Economic Report to the Governor 1992 reports that approximately 76% of Utah's total personal income is derived from wages, and Utah's wages are only at 85% of the U.S. average.
