Both Utah and the nation experienced a general decline in hospital admissions from 1986 to 1988. In 1989 the nation experienced its first increase, while Utah experienced its first increase in 1990 (Table 47, Figure 32). The Utah:U.S. comparison shows Utah's frequency of hospital admittance to be approximately 80% of the nation's, and that this relationship has held fairly constant over the last five years. Hospital Admissions (Utah Prevalence Rates, Sex-Age Group) Figure 33 Utah's lower frequency of hospital admittance may reflect Utah's younger population. The Utah hospitalization prevalence rate (prevalence rates are defined as the total number of cases per unit of population) by age demonstrates that younger persons are hospitalized less frequently than those who are older (Table 48, Figure 33). Hospitalizations for ages 45-64 and the 65 and older age group are substantially higher for males compared to the younger age groups. The age group of 18-44 year olds for females is high compared to both males and the older age groups due to hospitalization for child birth. 38 HEALTH STATUS |
