Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. 22 (2), pp. 55-59. 1 Rates for Utah were computed using incidence reports from the Utah Department of Health and from population estimates provided by the Utah Population Estimates Committee. 2Rates for the U.S. were computed using incidence reports and population estimates as reported in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. There was a significant drop in the incidence rate of pertussis (whooping cough) between 1950 and 1990 (Table 44), attributed in part to better public health programs, including immunizations. Utah's rates followed this trend, but appears to be above the nation's rates for 5 of the last 10 years. Utah may not be consistently below the U.S. rates because of random fluctuations in pertussis outbreaks, or may be indicative of Utah's high number of children, since the incidence of pertussis is greatest among infants under the age of one, followed by pre-schoolers, and finally school-aged children (Table 45). The Utah:U.S. comparison shows that Utah has varied substantially in its comparison with the U.S. There is no apparent trend in how Utah and the U.S. compare because of the small number of cases and the year to year variability of this disease.
